Musical Montage: Mya Ft. Blackstreet, Mase & Blinky Blink “Take Me There”

The Rugrats made their big screen debut 25 years ago today with The Rugrats Movie on November 20th, 1998 and the show’s theme song got remixed into the movie’s big single, “Take Me There” by Mya ft. Blackstreet, Mase & Blinky Blink.  Blackstreet was brought in to the movie’s soundtrack process early, as they were apparently the favorite R&B group at Nickelodeon.  Blackstreet’s Teddy Riley brought in Mya and Mase to “appeal to a broader audience of kids” and after also bringing in rapper Blinky Blink, the collaboration completed the song in a single day.  The song interpolates the Rugrats theme into the mix, which was composed by DEVO’s Mark Mothersbaugh, who composed the music for every season of Rugrats and all the movies.  “Take Me There” peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the soundtrack as a whole went platinum.  The music video features the group in a real-life replica of the Pickles house, kicking off with Mya jumping across the keys of a giant xylophone to replicate the opening of the Rugrats theme.  You can check out the music video below.
