Battle at the Box Office 11/18
Thor: The Dark World managed to stay at number one but it had surprisingly stiff competition from the only new release last week. Thor 2 took in another $38.4 million, over a 50% drop from last weekend’s opening. It’s up to over $146 million for it’s two weeks out and seems like it could crack the $200 million, possibly even $250 million mark. The Best Man Holiday almost dethroned Thor with a strong $30.5 million opening, doubling the original movie’s, The Best Man, opening of $9 million ($14 million with inflation). It’s one of the best openings for a movie targeted at African American audiences, better than every Tyler Perry movie except Medea goes to Jail and a little bit off from last year’s Think Like a Man. Last Vegas and Free Birds swapped places with Last Vegas taking third $8.8 million and Free Birds taking $8.3 million. Bad Grandpa rounded out the top 5 with $7.6 million. Down on the list, Gravity became the fifth highest grossing movie of the year, moving to over $240 million with this weekend’s additional $6.2 million. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will most likely destroy the competition this weekend, the only question is by how much will it destroy everything.
I’m like the J. Jonah Jameson of Everything Action, writing and editing and constantly demanding pictures of Spider-Man.
