Battle at the Box Office 8/14/23

Barbie continues to dominate the box office and was reunited with Oppenheimer, which moved back into the second place position after falling to third last week.

Barbie took in another $33.8 million, the ninth biggest 4th weekend of all time, and it now has $526.4 million domestically and $1.187 billion worldwide.  It’s still outpacing The Super Mario Bros Movie and seems like it will top that movie both domestically and worldwide to become the biggest movie of 2023.

Oppenheimer took second place and reformed Barbenheimer with another $18.8 million, bringing it to $264.2 million domestically and $649 million worldwide.  It should soon pass Inception to become Christopher Nolan’s third biggest film domestically and it has passed Interstellar worldwide to become Nolan’s fourth biggest movie in that category.  It needs to top $728.5 million worldwide to top Inception worldwide.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem had a solid hold from last weekend and moved up to third place with another $15.2 million.  That’s a drop of only 44% from last weekend and the movie has $72.3 million domestically and $94.2 million worldwide.  The movie had an A CinemaScore so word of mouth seems to be very strong.

Meg 2: The Trench dropped 57% from last week’s opening and made another $12.8 million, bringing it to $54.2 million domestically and $258.3 million worldwide.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter debuted in fifth place with $6.5 million domestically and not really any international release as of yet.  It was not expected to have a big debut and that definitely played out.  It opened lower than Universal’s other take on Dracula, Renfield, which made $8 million back in April, although it cost about half as much as Renfield budget-wise.

The Eternal Memory took the Per Theater average over the weekend, making $12,000 in 1 theater.
