Battle at the Box Office 1/8/24

After the first full weekend of 2024, Wonka remains at the top of the box office, closing in on half a billion worldwide.

Wonka took in another $14 million, bringing it to $164.3 million domestically and $467.8 million worldwide.  It’s closing the domestic gap on Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and another strong hold this coming week into the weekend could put it over the top.  It’s also far outpacing an extremely similar movie with a similar release and box office run, The Greatest Showman.  Wonka has about $10 million left to top The Greatest Showman domestically and has already outgrossed it worldwide.  Wonka seems on pace to crack the $500 million mark and we’ll have to see how it holds in the next couple weeks.

The first wide release of 2024, Night Swim, took second place with $11.7 million.  It’s on the low end for Blumhouse openings and less than half of what M3GAN kicked off 2023 with for the company.  It didn’t have the strongest reviews either, so it could nosedive this coming weekend.  The budget was around $15 million and it has $17.7 million worldwide so far, so it will probably at least break even during its theatrical run.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom dropped to third place with another $10.5 million, taking it to $100 million domestically and $336.5 million worldwide.  It has officially passed all other 2023 DC movies worldwide and is about $8 million behind beating The Flash domestically.  It needs about $27 million more to top the first Shazam! worldwide.

Migration and Anyone But You rounded out the top 5, with Anyone But You being the only movie in the top 10 to increase business from last weekend.  It added 11% from last weekend and took in $9.7 million and it now has $43.9 million domestically and $58.6 million worldwide.

Further down the list, The Iron Claw had an incredible hold from last weekend, only losing 3% and making another $4.5 million, bringing it to $24.8 million domestically.  Poor Things also got into the top 10 at 10th place with $1.9 million, taking it to $14.1 million domestically and $15.3 million worldwide.

The Per Theater average went to The Zone of Interest, which made $14,383 in each of the 6 theaters it was playing in over the weekend.
