Jumanji was knocked down to second by the final chapter in the Maze Runner series but it continues to do huge business and is now Sony’s third highest grossing film ever, outgrossing fellow 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Jumanji continued it’s domination even after over a month in theaters, taking the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row while both of the weekend’s new action releases performed better than expectations.
The first weekend of 2018 sees The Last Jedi fall out of the top spot and Jumanji surging ahead to take it while the first new release of 2018, Insidious: The Last Key, had the second best opening for the franchise.
There was no question The Last Jedi was going to destroy the box office but the only question was how big it would actually be? The answer is the second largest opening of all time along with a bunch of second place finishes for other records.
Coco remained at the top of the charts for a third weekend in a row while The Disaster Artist expanded wide and surged up into the top 5.
With no new wide releases this past weekend, the top half of the chart remained the same as a week ago but the real battle was in the lower half between a bunch of smaller movies in various form of limited release.
Coco defeated the Justice League over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend while a bunch of indie releases battled it out toward the bottom of the top 10.
Justice League finally arrived this weekend but had the lowest opening so far for the DC Extended Universe domestically while true story Wonder performed much better than expected and got rave reviews from both critics and audiences.
Thor: Ragnarok took the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row while Murder on the Orient Express and Daddy’s Home 2 were surprisingly strong newcomers.
Topping Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnorak became the 7th highest opening MCU movie ever and set a new November record in China as well while A Bad Moms Christmas tried to counter-program and Jigsaw and Boo 2! both suffered in the first post-Halloween weekend.
