Crazy Rich Asians remained on top of the box office for another weekend with one of the lowest drops ever between a first and second weekend while The Meg remains strong domestically and worldwide and the other new releases disappointed, if not outright bombed in the case of AXL.
Crazy Rich Asians took the box office title out of the mouth of The Meg and topped the weekend box office while Mile 22 underperformed and Alpha and Mission: Impossible Fallout were neck and neck for the fourth and fifth spots.
Blowing past even the most optimistic expectations, The Meg took the top spot at the box office with over $45 million, which gave Jason Statham his best non-Fast & Furious opening of all time.
Mission: Impossible Fallout maintained it’s number one spot at the box office as the new releases mostly underperformed to downright bombed while Black Panther, still in 25 theaters, crossed over $700 million domestic.
Mission Impossible: Fallout had the biggest opening of the MI franchise and the second biggest opening for star Tom Cruise while Teen Titans Go! underperformed in their big screen debut.
Sequels dominated the box office with 8 of the top ten movies being follow ups in various franchises with The Equalizer 2 coming out on top, just barely, over Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
The third Hotel Transylvania movie managed to knock out Ant-Man and The Wasp and The Rock to take the top spot at the box office over the weekend.
Ant-Man and The Wasp dominated the weekend with an opening at that was over $12 million above what the first Ant-Man made in its opening weekend while The First Purge continued the solid performances of The Purge franchise for Blumhouse and Fallen Kingdom crossed over the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Fallen Kingdom remained on the top of the box office for a second week in a row while new releases Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Uncle Drew did better than expectations.
Although it didn’t reach the insane heights of Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom still had a gigantic opening while Incredibles 2 also put up a ton of competition and became the second highest grossing film of the summer in its second week of release.
