It’s been almost 25 years but Mortal Kombat is finally back on the big screen, and at home on HBO Max, with the new R rated movie as MMA fighter Cole Young gets dragged into the conflict between Earth and Outworld due to a mysterious birthmark that designates him as one of Earth’s champions in the next Mortal Kombat tournament.
Arriving on HBO Max and in theaters in April, Mortal Kombat returns to live-action with an R rated reboot starring Lewis Tan, Joe Taslim, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ludi Lin, Max Huang and more as the best warriors of Earthrealm battle for the fate of the planet against the supernatural warriors of Outworld.
Mortal Kombat gets animated with the first R rated adaptation of the long-running franchise, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, which puts a new spin on the story of the original Mortal Kombat by focusing on Scorpion and his quest for vengeance against Sub-Zero.
Following in the wake of the more recent, R rated, DC Animated films, WB Animation is going back to the original Mortal Kombat with this spring’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge animated film.
Debuting in 1996, MK: Defenders of the Realm tied into both the first live action movie and Mortal Kombat 3, which debuted the year before, and followed Liu Kang, Sonya, Jax, Stryker, Raiden, Kitana and Sub-Zero as they defender Earthrealm from the invading forces of Shao Khan.
